This enormous dinosaur, which is more than 40 meters long, came to live on our planet exactly in the territory that we now consider to be the American continent, in the northern area of that continent.
Its official name is Seismosaurus, it had a total height of 6 meters and its weight was not less than 5 tons, its life was carried out during the Cretaceous period, precisely in the superior layer of this one, this means that without a doubt it lived more than 120 million years ago.

To understand their taxonomy it is important to observe the following:

Characteristics of the Seismosaurus
It is said that this specimen is one of the longest that has inhabited the Earth, besides it is known that the structure of its nose was located precisely in the area of the head that is called “tip”, meanwhile, the dental elements of this specimen enjoyed a particular form of cylinder, which could only be located in the frontal area of the muzzle.
On its extremities we can say that those located in the front area were smaller than those located in the back, so if we start to compare with an animal of our days, probably these extremities would have many similarities with the elephants, extremities that also had in its final structure a set of five fingers.
Of these five fingers, only one of them had a powerful claw that helped defend it from other animals that could surely become its food, in other words, the claw had the function of defending and protecting the animal in cases of danger or extreme threat situations.
If we continue to focus and observe the powerful extremities of this specimen, we will probably realize very quickly that these elements were really a marvel, since they were perfectly designed to be able to support a weight of great dimension, otherwise the animal would not even be able to stand up or remain upright.
Also, these extremities had the great function and ability to give the whole animal a sort of lightness and even speed to move, turn around and even hit other animals that represented, for sure, an extreme threat. This blow or defence was carried out using one of their secret weapons, a structure perfectly prepared to carry out such a manoeuvre: the tail.
It was this tail that on various occasions would surely have saved the animal’s life, since it helped it to fight against the strength and dexterity of other much more aggressive and even more powerful animals. This tail was used as a powerful whip, which lashed out against the corpulent muscles of other animals, and surely gave it time to escape or to finish off its opponent once and for all.
Its weight, as we had already mentioned, was very considerable, even if we continue comparing it with the famous elegant ones, we can say that this specimen had the weight of two pairs of these enormous animals that exist in our days, that is why it is natural for any person that the speed was not a quality of this animal.
However, as we have already mentioned, it was not true or totally true either that it was an extremely slow animal, in fact it had extremities adapted enough to perform maneuvers and to give the necessary lightness to the specimen.
Its name is due precisely to the weight that this animal represents, so what it really means is the following: reptile earthquake.
Meanwhile, there is still an intense and heated debate about whether this famous and gigantic Seismosaurus is among the specimens known as Diplodocus, while some very prestigious scientists claim with complete confidence that the Seismosaurus was of a much larger volume or dimensions than the specimens placed inside the Diplodocus, other researchers categorically deny such assertion, although currently (and as you can see in the previous taxonomic table) it is found in the Genus Diplodocus as the species D.hallorum.
Discovery of the Seismosaurus
The discovery of the most important vestiges of this specimen was carried out in the famous state of New Mexico, place in which remains of other specimens have been found, as we have already been able to know in previous articles, and it was in 1979 that the discovery of the protagonist dinosaur took place.
There were actually a significant number of remains that were found in that state, however, it was really an accident that led to the discovery of the animal, as they were hikers, who were crossing the area and noticed the presence of the remains of this huge specimen.
As in every prehistoric animal discovery, confusion was not an alien element to the situation, the whole scientific community was really perplexed due to the discovery of such a gigantic animal, and it was not until 1985 that scientists managed to place this large specimen among the animals known mostly under the name of Sauropod.
It is said that when the first researchers trained to study the animal, they themselves thought that it was the biggest animal ever seen in history, so we can surely imagine the great impact that this finding caused all over the world, not only the scientific world and not only the world of Paleontology.
Feeding of the Seismosaurus
The animal’s diet was based rigidly on the consumption of vegetables, this means that it was an herbivorous specimen, and because the circumstances were quite favorable for the growth of the plants that this animal needed to eat, the food for this dinosaur was not an element that was in short supply.
In fact, it was quite abundant, and this explains why the animal could have grown so much, because its food was very rich. Let’s remember that at that time there were climatic conditions such as humidity and also heat, conditions that encouraged the growth and development of plants in an extremely fast way.
About the dental elements of the specimen it has been studied that they were designed in an almost perfect way to be able to extract the vegetable food from where they were, teeth that were as resistant as effective at the moment of pulling up those plants, since this enormous animal needed a huge quantity of vegetables to be able to maintain its body with energy and working in a totally healthy way.
